AAJ Convention in San Francisco

Hunter Hillin returned from the annual convention of the American Association of Justice (AAJ) in San Francisco. While there, Mr. Hillin met with the AAJ Birth Trauma Litigation Group, the Traumatic Brain Injury Litigation Group and the Motorcycle Litigation Group, sharing ideas for increasing public safety and justice for victims of negligence.

UV tanning beds: "carcinogenic to humans"

The International Agency for Research on Cancer, an arm of the World Health Organization, labeled UV tanning beds "carcinogenic to humans." This decision was based on a comprehensive review of 20 epidemiological studies which found the risk of skin melanoma increases by 75 per cent when the use of tanning devices starts before the age of 30.

Sotomayor Confirmed by Senate Judiciary

Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee split largely along party lines in recommending the first Hispanic nominee to the United States Supreme Court. The vote in favor of Sonia Sotomayor was 13-6, with Lindsey Graham (R-SC) the only Republican voting to support Sotomayor's nomination. The full Senate decides whether to confirm her next week.

Texting Truck Drivers

A new study from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute surveyed truck drivers over a period of 18 months. The new study found that when drivers texted, their collision risk was 23 times greater than when not texting.

Vytorin and Zetia

Merck & Co. and Schering-Plough Corp. will pay $5.4 million to settle civil claims with the attorneys general of 35 states and the District of Columbia which charged that the companies covered up test results that cast doubt on the effectiveness of two blockbuster cholesterol drugs Vytorin and Zetia.

"Negligent misrepresentations"

In a lawsuit filed last week, the California Public Employees' Retirement System said that it might lose more than $1 billion from structured investment vehicles, or SIVs, that received top grades from Moody's Investors Service Inc, Standard & Poor's and Fitch Inc.
